Comparison of Triamcinolone and Trypan Blue in Internal Limiting Membrane Peeling.

Abstract

Introduction: Internal limiting membrane peeling during macular hole surgery improves the closure rate and postoperative outcome in most cases, but is sometimes difficult to perform because of poor visibility of the internal limiting membrane. The use of intra-operative dyes for peeling of the internal limiting membrane (ILM) during surgery for macular hole and epimacular membrane (EMM) has been extensively used for the past decade but disagreement over which dyes to use and how to use them persist. The purpose of our study was to compare internal limiting membrane peel using Triamconolone Acetonide versus Trypan Blue. Methods: This study was conducted atInstitute ofOphthalmology Unit-III, Mayo Hospital Lahore. 20 patients with macular hole were divided into equal groups. 10 patients in Group I operated for internal limiting membrane peel using triamcinolone acetonide while the other 10 patients in Group II operated with internal limiting membrane peel using trypan blue. Results: There were total 20 patients divided into two equal groups. In group I we were able to successfully peel ILM in all the 10 patients while in group II with Trypan blue, in 8 out of 10 patients internal limiting membrane peeling was done successfully. In remaining two patients we additionally had to use triamcinolone acetonide to peel the internal limiting membrane. Conclusion: Both Triamcinolone Acetonide & Trypan Blue are good alternatives for internal limiting membrane peeling in patients undergoing macular hole surgery.
